King James Version (KJV)
By the End of Chapter 2, the writer for the most part, has finished his dissertation that Christ Jesus is greater than the Angels. Also that by his suffering earned the right to be Our High Priest, by taking on the Nature of those of Abraham. He earned this right by His humbling himself, and by not taking on the nature of Angels, but of His brethren. Through His every suffering as a Man, he was also being exalted by the Father. At the very Worst of the Worst, his last breath in this world, He was given the Best of the Best, by the Heavenly Father. Highly Exalted at the Right Hand of the Father. For the Believer, and Servant of Christ Jesus, the more you find yourself in very difficult straits, and problems that try your soul, remember you are actually being Exalted in Heaven. The Way Up In God Is Down!
Now the writer moves on in his legal argument to the fact that Jesus, not only is greater than the Angels, but also greater than Moses, and all others!
3, 1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
In this case the word Apostle, is referring to One who is sent. Now He is the High Priest upon the declaration by the Heavenly Father, “… forever after the order of Melchizedek …” He is the High Priest who enters behind the Curtain, and approaches the heavenly altar, for all mankind, Jew, and Gentile alike.
2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
They were both Faithful, this is important in this chapter. Both appointed by God for a certain mission, that needed to be accomplished by the will of God. Being faithful to that which God appoints you, will require of you and will not be easy, but you will be exalted in due season. God doesn’t forget. The harder the success of the mission becomes, Count It All Joy, you are being Exalted by God! You are being made perfect (complete) with him through suffering, that the mission Will Be Completed! As the will of the carnal man is suffering, the Heavenly Will is being Wrought! As the Heavenly Will is being wrought, it becomes more apparent what God is Doing. It then becomes somewhat easier to be Obedient to the Heavenly calling which is foreign to our Nature. You have been counted worthy to be a Partaker of the Heavenly Calling, and by surrendering to it, are now an Heir ready to one day receive your Inheritance. He that Humbleth Himself Shall Be Exalted. God is Great, and His ways are Not our ways. All through the scripture this truth is made apparent.
3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
Moses, the Jewish people, and the Gentiles grafted in by the BRANCH, Are the House, and are Servants In the House. Christ Jesus is the Builder of the House!
4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
All that is Built in the world is by man, but the World, and Universe are Built by God.
5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
Let Moses be Our Example of Faithfulness to God to that which we have been appointed. Also like Moses, for a testimony at a later time for new believers to emulate.
6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
Here it is summed up, Keep The Faith Firm to the End! Every single struggle, battle, and lengthy trial you face, will tempt your FAITH. As you fight the Good fight of faith, your faith will eventually get stronger, because it is being exercised. This assembly was losing their faith, and beginning to drift back into Judaism. The writer is Ministering to them to stir up their faith! Don’t give up, Fight to Keep your faith to the End. No matter what happens, Have Confidence in What Christ Jesus did, and is doing for you, even if you do not understand what is happening. You are a Joint Heir with Christ Jesus, no matter what happens in this life, that attacks your faith. Let us review the Beautiful words of Wisdom from the Petrine Tradition, 1 Peter 4. 12-19:
12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.
16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
7 For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, (MT)
7 For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. 8 To-day, if ye will hear his voice, (LXX)
8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
A Hard Heart is caused, and perpetuated by Unbelief. Faith Pleases God, the opposite of Faith, Unbelief Angers God! The reason for this is that Unbelief questions in a Negative sense, the very Motives of God!
8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (MT) (Very Close).
8 To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, according to the day of irritation in the wilderness: (LXX). (A bit different)
9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. (MT) (Very Close).
9 where your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works. (LXX) (Very Close).
10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: (MT). The MT here is a bit different.
10 Forty years was I grieved with this generation, and said, They do always err in their heart, and they have not known my ways. (LXX). The LXX is much closer than the MT here.
11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
For forty years the children of Jacob complained, murmured, falsely accused Moses, of leading them to starvation, distress, and death, in the desert. Each complaint brought Moses (who was getting really tired of all of this) to God, and God would relieve the situation at Moses request. God was really getting very weary, and angry at this. For every time God delivered them from whatever complaint, they did not retain it in their memory, and worse they found God’s provision unsatisfactory. They continued in their dissimulation, and unbelief until God said, Thats It, I’ve Had Enough! Let us on our Journey be very, very careful, not to repeat this error. Let us be Thankful in All things to God, whether situations are satisfactory to our liking or not. For the children of Jacob got right close to the Land That Floweth With Milk And Honey! They justifiably were Refused entry by God! God Hates Unbelief! The only ones of that Generation that were allowed into the Promised Land, were a precious few that Kept The Faith To The End! The rest Died in the Desert.
11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest. (MT). (Close).
11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.(LXX). (Exact Match). I find it superb, and amazing, that this speaker unto the writer, has not only the Psalms from the Temple Scrolls memorized, but also of the Septuagint. One could easily see how sometimes in the quotations the two wordings could become interweaved. Also it appears that sometimes he slightly paraphrases with his own words. What a knowledge of the Psalms! A Masterful Defense for the Truth.
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
Or the deceitfulness of Unbelief. It will slowly enter in, and slowly harden your heart! Beware of It, prevent it at all costs!
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
ENCOURAGE One Another Daily, uplift the hurting, be what Jesus was to the weak, and weary, the hungry, and the dieing. To those in need of healing, and setting them at liberty those that have been bruised. Open the blind eyes, and the deaf ears, lift up the downtrodden. Restore with grace, and humility, those who have, or are losing their faith in God, and set the captive free! We should do these things instead of ripping our Brother, or Sister, or the Lost, to shreds with our Pride because we think we are better, or have less sin, and they are lower. That is the very attitude and spirit of Antichrist!
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
Here it is Again, We are partakers of the Inheritance with Christ Jesus, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast!
15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
Today! There is still Time to become a Partaker with Christ Jesus, if you will hear and or Heed the Voice of God. Do not harden your hearts now of all times Christian! You are very close to the Land that flows with Milk, and Honey! The hour is late, soon the Dead will rise first, then we which are alive and remain shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and will rise to meet them in the air! Harden not your Hearts today, Hear his voice calling. Hold fast the beginning of your Confidence God ward!
16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
Not all that left Egypt were really with, and for Moses! They had a secret, and selfish agenda, and they perished in the Desert. You do not provoke God, the end for you will not be well. Do not Tempt the Lord Thy God!
17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
With those who held the sin of Unbelief.
18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
Yes, and Amen.
19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
This is what it all really came down to, “…because of unbelief…”! This is not really dealing with Believing in God, or Not Believing in God! This is talking about not keeping the faith that God would finish that which He Started. Remember Satan Believes in God, and Trembles.
